On the first Saturday of December, Old Town Bluffton puts on its holiday best for the annual Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting — a free, family-centered tradition that's been part of Bluffton's community life for decades. The parade winds down Calhoun Street as the sun sets, followed by the community tree lighting in Oyster Factory Park with hot cocoa, carolers, and the warm glow of holiday lights in the live oak canopy. It's quintessential small-town Lowcountry at its best.

What to Expect

1

The Holiday Parade

The parade steps off at 6 PM from the north end of Calhoun Street and winds through Old Town to Oyster Factory Park. Floats, marching bands, community groups, local businesses, and the inevitable appearance of Santa Claus make up the procession. Claim your spot along Calhoun Street by 5:30 PM for a good view.

2

Community Tree Lighting

Following the parade, the community gathers at Oyster Factory Park for the tree lighting ceremony. The moment the lights come on — with the May River as a backdrop — is genuinely magical, especially for families with young children.

3

Hot Cocoa, Carolers & Holiday Atmosphere

Hot cocoa and seasonal treats are available throughout the evening. Carolers perform along Calhoun Street before and during the parade. The whole of Old Town is decorated for the season, making it one of the most photogenic evenings of the year in Bluffton.

4

Old Town Christmas Market

The Old Town Christmas Market runs on weekends throughout December along Calhoun Street, with handmade gifts, local art, and warm drinks. If you're visiting for the parade, plan to return on a weekend to browse the market in daylight.

Parking

Arrive by 5 PM — Calhoun Street closes to traffic at 5:30 PM. Use Bluffton Community Park lot or Boundary Street side streets. The Heyward House lot (70 Boundary St) is a reliable option. Do not plan to park on Calhoun Street itself after 5 PM.

Tips for Attending

  • Arrive by 5:30 PM to claim a good spot along Calhoun Street before the road closes to traffic.

  • Dress warmly — December evenings in the Lowcountry can be cold, especially near the water at Oyster Factory Park.

  • Bring a blanket or folding chairs for the tree lighting at Oyster Factory Park.

  • Park at Bluffton Community Park or the Heyward House lot — Calhoun Street closes at 5:30 PM and you won't be able to move your car until after the parade.

  • This is one of the most popular events of the year for local families. Expect crowds — and embrace them. The community atmosphere is part of what makes it special.
