Daufuskie Island sits between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, accessible only by ferry — no cars, no bridges, no chain restaurants. It's one of the last places in the Lowcountry where the Gullah Geechee culture survives in its most authentic form, and its combination of natural beauty, history, and island solitude makes it one of the most memorable day trips you can take from Bluffton. The ferry departs from Hilton Head (about 20 minutes from Bluffton), and the crossing takes roughly 45 minutes.
Getting There
Take US-278 east from Bluffton to Hilton Head Island (20 min), then catch the passenger ferry from Broad Creek Marina or Shelter Cove. The crossing takes about 45 minutes. No cars are permitted on the island — rent a golf cart on arrival.
Gullah Geechee Heritage
Daufuskie is one of the most significant Gullah Geechee cultural sites in the country. The island's isolation preserved the language, traditions, and community long after they faded elsewhere. The First Union African Baptist Church (1881) and the Mary Fields School — where Pat Conroy taught and based The Water Is Wide — are essential stops.
Mary Fields School & Pat Conroy
Author Pat Conroy taught on Daufuskie in 1969–70, and his experience became the basis for The Water Is Wide (later filmed as Conrack). The one-room schoolhouse where he taught still stands. For Conroy fans, this is a pilgrimage site.
Pristine Beaches
Daufuskie's Atlantic-facing beaches are among the most pristine in South Carolina — wide, uncrowded, and backed by maritime forest rather than resort development. The contrast with Hilton Head's developed shoreline is striking.
Golf Cart Island
Golf carts are the primary mode of transport on Daufuskie. Rentals are available near the ferry landing. A full island loop takes about 2 hours and passes the historic sites, beaches, and the Bloody Point lighthouse area.
Haig Point & Melrose
Two private resort communities occupy much of the island's interior — Haig Point and Melrose. Day visitors can access the public areas, beaches, and historic sites without resort membership.
Dining on the Island
Options are limited but charming — a handful of small restaurants and bars near the ferry landing serve fresh seafood and cold drinks. The Old Daufuskie Crab Company is the island institution. Bring cash.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for exploring on foot and by golf cart. Summer is hot but the beaches are at their best. Avoid weekends in peak season if you prefer a quieter experience.
