Walk Old Town
The entire historic district is free to explore on foot. Calhoun Street, the side streets, the churchyard, the waterfront parks — all of it is publicly accessible and all of it is worth your time. Budget two to three hours for a proper wander.
Pinckney Island Wildlife Refuge
Free admission, free parking, 14 miles of trails. One of the best wildlife refuges on the East Coast, and it costs nothing to visit. Bring binoculars.
First Friday Art Walk
Free admission to all galleries, free wine at most of them, and the best atmosphere in Old Town. On the first Friday of every month, 5–8pm.
Sunset at Oyster Factory Park
Free, open daily, and one of the best sunsets in the Lowcountry. Bring a blanket and something to drink.
The Bluffton Farmers Market
Free to browse, and the samples alone are worth the trip. Thursday mornings, 8am–1pm, at Bluffton Community Park.
Church of the Cross
The church and its grounds are open to visitors during daylight hours. The river view from the churchyard is one of the most beautiful in Bluffton — and it's completely free.
Heyward House Grounds
The exterior of the Heyward House and its grounds are free to visit. The interior tours have a small fee, but the building itself and the historical context are worth seeing even from outside.
A full day of free activities in Bluffton is genuinely possible — and genuinely good. The only thing you'll need to spend money on is food, and even that can be done cheaply at the farmers market.
