Oyster Factory Park
The most accessible river spot in Old Town. A small park on a bluff above the water, with a dock, benches, and the best sunset view in Bluffton. Free, open daily, and worth visiting at multiple times of day.
Kayak the Tidal Creeks
The May River's tidal creek system is best explored by kayak. The narrow creeks behind the marsh grass are a different world — quiet, wildlife-rich, and completely removed from the road. Several outfitters offer rentals and guided tours.
Fishing Charter
The May River and its surrounding waters are exceptional inshore fishing territory. Redfish, flounder, and speckled trout are the main targets. A half-day charter with a local guide is one of the best ways to spend a morning in Bluffton.
Eat Oysters from the River
May River oysters are harvested locally and served at restaurants throughout Old Town. They're smaller and saltier than Atlantic oysters — and many people think they're better. Order them raw at the oyster bar and taste the river.
Watch for Dolphins
Bottlenose dolphins are a regular presence in the May River, particularly in the warmer months. The best sightings are from the water — kayak, boat, or paddleboard — but the bluff at Oyster Factory Park also offers good views when the tide is moving.
The Church of the Cross Bluff
The churchyard of the Church of the Cross sits on a high bluff above the May River. It's one of the most beautiful river views in Bluffton, and the combination of the historic church and the water below makes it a genuinely moving place to stand.
The May River is at its most beautiful in the early morning and at sunset. Plan at least one visit to the water at each end of the day.
